R&D joint project funding 2021-2027 SAB for the development of an innovative automated micro-welding process technology including system technology for joining copper strands to SmartTex (TexWeld)
In this project, an innovative automated micro-welding process technology including system technology for joining copper strands to SmartTex is to be developed in cooperation with the Steinbeis Innovation Centre in Chemnitz.
The increasing demand for electronic systems in smart textiles requires reliable electrical connections between miniature and microelectronic components and the conductive textile structures. Existing methods are not reliably stable over the long term and the connection quality is not good enough. In addition, conventional connection technologies are reaching their limits as electronic components and circuit boards are becoming ever smaller. The micro-welding process technology to be developed, based on micro-resistance spot welding, enables the reliable realisation of high-quality contacts on the printed circuit boards. The copper wires are insulated and the insulation must be precisely removed from the contact elements. This can also be achieved with the precisely positionable micro welding technology. Compared to other joining methods such as soldering, micro laser and arc welding or metallic thermal bonding, automated micro fusion welding technology offers advantages such as lower energy requirements, reduced heat influence, high strength, very good electrical conductivity and high automation potential.
The project is funded by the Free State of Saxony under the application number 100692786 and co-financed by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
